At Disability Insurance Law Group, our Florida and Nationwide attorneys know chronic pain last months or years and happens in all parts of the body. Chronic pain is a common condition and a general reason individuals seek medical care. It is estimated that 25% of adults in the United States experience chronic pain, which can happen anywhere in the body, and can either exist all the time or come and go.
Chronic pain is invasive and can interfere with a person’s daily activities, including their ability to work, or take care of themselves or others. Because of its far-reaching consequences, chronic pain can subsequently lead to depression, anxiety, and trouble sleeping, which make the pain worse.

How is Chronic Pain Diagnosed?
Chronic pain is difficult to diagnose, but not impossible, simply because it can be explained in many ways by different people.
Common symptoms of chronic pain may include, but are not limited to:
Aching.
Burning.
Shooting.
Squeezing.
Stiffness.
Stinging.
Throbbing.
Chronic pain often leads to other symptoms and conditions, including:
Anxiety.
Depression.
Fatigue, or feeling overly tired most of the time.
Insomnia, or trouble falling asleep.
Mood swings.
Pain is chronic if it lasts or comes and goes for more than three months and should be examined by a medical physician who will physically examine the body and order tests to look for the cause of the pain.
The physician may order tests to help confirm the origin of the chronic pain, which may include:
Blood tests.
Electromyography to test muscle activity.
Imaging tests, including X-rays and MRIs.
Nerve conduction studies.
Reflex and balance tests.
Spinal fluid tests.
Urine tests.
Once an individual has been diagnosed with chronic pain, treatment may include one, or a combination of the following:
Anticonvulsants for nerve pain.
Antidepressants such as tricyclic antidepressants.
Corticosteroid.
Epidural steroid injections.
Medical marijuana.
Muscle relaxers.
Nerve blocks to reduce feeling in the area.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen.
Opioids.
Sedatives to help with anxiety or insomnia.
Topical products that contain pain relievers or ingredients that create soothing heat or cold.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to relieve pain.
Certain therapies may also help manage chronic pain, including counseling, and occupational and/or physical therapy. Currently, there is no cure for chronic pain, other than to identify and treat its cause.
